Sources of Packet Loss in Voice Over IP
Even though it’s the holiday season, when we talk about packet loss in the world of voice over IP, we are not talking about misplaced shipments from your local UPS driver! Packet Loss refers to the data within your VOIP system that fails to reach its connection point.
Each time you send data across your computer network small chunks of information called packets reach out to virtual destinations. When talking about voice over IP, packet loss is the failure of your data to make a connection. Most packet losses last a short amount of time (1-3 seconds) and can go undetected in many systems. For the user it creates recurring gaps and jitter.
If your VOIP system is experiencing packet loss it is important to pinpoint the source of the packet loss and overcome the problem. In general, there are two types of packet loss when it comes to VOIP: Receive Packet Loss and Receipt Packet Discard. Let’s take a few minutes to discuss each one
In Received Packet Loss the data has been left somewhere in the network. It has been thrown to the wayside in a way while the system continued to move forward. This can be a result of:
• Malfunctioning links
• The system is overloaded
• Connecting paths fail
• Problems with MSU or DSP
With Receipt Packet Discard the data has failed to reach its destination on time. This is a case of too little too late and is the most frequent type of packet loss. This can be a result of:
• Malfunctioning QoS
• Packets that are occurring in the wrong sequence
