IT Strategic Development Issue: Balancing Productivity with Security
With strong IT strategic development, business owners and executives know that IT personnel are supporting their company’s needs. The hardware and software, the organization of the IT set-up, and the policies governing cyber practices should all align with what’s best for the company’s growth and goals.
However, what happens when there’s a tension between two competing needs?
A recent article from Business Cloud News discusses a survey by Dell showing that many IT decision makers are too worried about security risks to expand on opportunities for employee mobility.
Having a more mobile workforce can significantly boost productivity and allow for smoother and more flexible collaboration between employees and business partners. Employees also respond favorably to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy, which allows them to carry out work tasks on a variety of computing devices.
However, as the Dell survey shows, the benefits of a mobile workforce are clashing with concerns over compromised cyber security. Some of the worries stem from a lack of confidence in public cloud programs and their security. IT decision makers also aren’t sure about what policies will best protect company data across a variety of devices. Furthermore, only 25% of those surveyed felt that their company’s senior executives know enough about IT security issues to make educated decisions; and only 25% of respondents said that executives have laid out an adequate budget for data security.
Some of these problems stem from a lack of understanding and communication between senior executives and IT personnel; without such an understanding, a company’s IT policies will likely not align with its broader goals. Companies also struggle to find a balance between productivity and security, all while working within the constraints of an IT budget.
With strong IT strategic development, companies can address these issues in a more clear and comprehensive way, helping both IT personnel and senior executives work together to make well-considered decisions that serve business objectives.
