Small business VoIP is a necessity for disaster recovery planning. When creating a business continuity plan, businesses are mostly focused on data backup and cloud storage. While this is an important aspect of disaster recovery planning, it doesn’t cover all of the risks.
Data backup and cloud storage protect a business’ information, but it can’t provide any insurance for its communications. During disaster recovery, it’s just as important to keep in touch with clients and employees as it is to be able to retrieve your data.
And that’s where VoIP comes in. A VoIP system is flexible and can be utilized even outside of the office. So even if your office has a power outage, you can still communicate with your business partners by using your VoIP system.
During a disaster recovery, calls can be forwarded to a second business location and/or home office. If that is not an option, calls can be forwarded to numerous employees cell phones, preventing a potential loss of business.
A recent Computer Weekly article explains the steps businesses need to take for disaster recovery and mentions VoIP as an essential aspect. According to the article, businesses can use VoIP as long as they have access to the system with an Internet connection:
“There’s actually no magic about it; that’s the way IP is supposed to work. The same thing can be done for telephony if IP is being used. Anywhere there is an Internet connection, there can be corporate telephony. This flexibility and adaptability is perfect for any emergency or disaster situation where other networks may be inoperable.”
Consider what would happen during disaster recovery if your business used a traditional landline phone service rather than VoIP. If working from your office is out of the question, then it’s simply not possible to use the landline phone.
But not communicating with clients and employees just isn’t an option during disaster recovery. If anything, it’s the time when communication is most important in order to ensure the stability of future business operations.
With VoIP, businesses can keep contact with clients as if nothing happened. In addition to a VoIP system, there are only two things a company needs to call business partners: a VoIP phone and an Internet connection. The business can then go on to inform clients of their current state and ensure them that all will be back to normal soon.
