Embracing the Inevitable: Why One Teacher is Educating Students on ChatGPT

As technology continues to evolve, one of the biggest challenges is understanding how users can utilize Artificial Intelligence effectively and not excessively. For example, one of the biggest issues teachers face is technology used in the classroom. With tools now being created, such as AI writing assistance, mathematical problem-solving apps, etc., it has become extremely difficult for the educational industries to determine whether students are really learning and understanding the material or if AI is doing all of the work for them.

In a Reddit conversation, a teacher found themselves in this predicament. In the thread, the teacher came to the realization that it is a losing battle to try and stop students from utilizing ChatGPT. Instead, the teacher decided to take a different approach. This new approach is to educate students on how to use the tool to assist in learning to cheat to avoid doing any work.

By teaching students how to use these tools the correct way, they can help level the playing field for all students. The teacher uses the example of the first handheld calculator to prove their point. When calculators were first introduced, many people saw them as a crutch that would hinder students' ability to do math on their own. However, as time went on, it became clear that calculators could be a valuable tool when used correctly. The same could be said for AI-powered writing assistants and search engines.

Of course, the teacher acknowledges that these tools are not perfect. They have limitations, and students need to be aware of them. The teacher shows their students examples of these tools creating incorrect information, such as giving the wrong answers for advanced math problems. The teacher stated that it is imperative that students understand the importance of critical thinking and double-checking the information they receive from these tools.

Overall, the use of technology in the classroom is a complex issue that educators must navigate. While it's a losing battle to try and stop students from using these tools, teachers can help their students use them effectively by teaching them their limitations and how to use them as a tool, not a crutch. By doing so, they are helping to prepare their students for the world where technology will continue to play an increasingly important role.
