Why We No Longer Use Hard Drives at Infiniwiz

Comparing capacity and price is only one aspect of selecting the best storage. Your computer's performance, including power consumption and reliability, depends on the sort of storage it utilizes. The two primary storage solutions that are used are solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs). However, while HDDs have been used for over 60 years and have ultimately been a go-to for many businesses, it is now important to note that there is a new and more reliable way to store data, and this is through solid-state drives.

In terms of how Infiniwiz assists company’s in helping them gain the best practice for technology usage and keeping clients from spending endless, frustrating hours managing their business IT, we have transitioned into using SSDs rather than hard disk drives for multiple reasons. Allow me to elaborate.

Data is still frequently stored on hard drives, also referred to as mechanical drives or spinning drives. They are a type of non-volatile storage that stores data even when the power is switched off and are reasonably priced in comparison to other storage options like solid-state drives (SSDs). Hard drives, however, are not as common as they once were due to a number of drawbacks when compared to alternative forms of storage.

Some of the reasons why hard drives are not used as much anymore include:

Slower access speeds

Compared to SSDs, which employ memory chips to store data, hard drives are slower to access data. This can significantly impact how well a computer or other device performs, particularly when loading huge files or apps. HDDs must physically move the read/write head to the right track on the spinning disk in order to access and transfer data, but SSDs can access and transfer data significantly more quickly because they have no moving parts.

Reliability

Because hard drives are mechanical devices with moving components like motors and platters, they are more likely to fail from wear and tear. Additionally, they are more vulnerable to physical harm from being dropped or bumped. However, because an SSD is a chip and does not have any spinning parts, it is less likely to break.

Longevity

Solid-state drives are known to work longer because there are no moving parts. This means that there are fewer interruptions for the end user and their work processes. Also, if a hard drive happens to fail, there will be downtime for the company until the hard drive is replaced.

Size

SSDs are a great option for lightweight devices because they are smaller and lighter than HDDs.

Higher power consumption

The battery life of laptops and other devices may be shortened by hard drives since they consume more power than SSDs. SSDs consume less energy than HDDs, which is advantageous for laptops that run on batteries.

Noise

SSDs are silent because they have no moving parts, while HDDs produce noise as the spinning disks move.

In general, hard drives are still useful for some tasks like mass archiving or data backup. However, because SSDs offer faster access speeds, greater durability, and less power consumption, they have largely supplanted HDDs.
